Oil & Gas Construction (and IT) Industry
Found by McDermott Engineering London, in the early 80s. Firstly worked on piping on Esso Odin (now abandoned) and moved onto the British Gas onshore Morcambe Bay project. Shell then allowed me to do both onshore and offshore corrosion studies for the SE development. Involved in the early days of computer engineering. Developed innovative solutions for managing weight (important offshore), then worked with Prime/ACS to apply their engineering database solution (Phoenix) to the offshore industry - the other partner being EDF for nuclear plants. Ended up being funded to look at new workstation technologies, but with a short offshore assignment with Total in between.
Spent a couple of years working, firstly as an independent with Atari and Perihelion on the Atari Transputer workstation (Abaq/ATW800), before joining Aspect Dynamics. There I was technical director applying parallel processing to remote, wireless based, household utility monitoring (way ahead!)
Finally ended up with John Brown Engineering & Construction, initially developing one of the first "global" virtual engineering offices. The real break, however, came with the BP Cleeton Compression project and the new role of "Value Manager". This was a fantastic project which provided a unique opportunity to develop commercial skills (see all the publications under Oil & Gas for more). Finished off holding a similar role for a much larger project - BP Bruce Phase II - before moving on as a consultant.
